How many pounds of thrust in an electric trolling motor is equal to one (1) horsepower?

Gas outboard motors are dirty, heavy, and super expensive. Electric outboard fishing motors are expensive and the battery is as heavier as a comparable gas model outboard motor, but then the extra gas can can be heavy too. I have a 1hp electric and I'm just curious about the pounds of thrust it produces because it isn't labeled for thrust in pounds.
Best Answer:
I have a 2hp SeaKing motor and a 55lbs thrust Minkota and my trolling motor can overtake my SeaKing on a full charge.

They do not easily interchange with a simple formula, that is to say Trust horse power are different in the fact that horsepower is the work an engine is capable of doing, where as pounds of thrust is the efficient utilization of an engines work translated onto a propeller which is creating thrust different amounts based upon its size median its working in, ie Air or water. that's why it isn't labeled in pounds of thrust cause they don't know what size prop you will use.

You'll need to figure out how many kilowatts of power your motor uses to get close to HP power, but it's 0.7459999999980754 kilowatts to equal one HP. Good Luck

2 cycle gas outboards are dirty. HPDI and 4 cycle outboards are extremely clean and very fuel efficient when compared to their 2 cycle gas guzzling cousins.

no such formula but Minnkota estimates that one pound of thrust is needed for every 65 pounds of weight being propelled.

Not sure why you want to know, but I can tell you I have a old electric 3HP Minn Kota w/maximizer on a 16" plastic Coleman Scanoe (this Scanoe I have is older heavier than fiberglass or aluminum) with transom (square back) and that sucker moves pretty darn fast just with me and fishing gear. Adjust the trim on the motor along with the payload and passengers for maximum speed.
